What is DC coupled system ?
The term DC coupling refers to the way any DC Power is fed into a Hybrid inverter from either Solar, Wind & Aqua Generation, that in turn directly Charges Energy Storage system.
DC Inverters are the most common method of transforming DC power into AC power, by feeding Solar, Wind or Aqua Power directly into a Hybrid Inverter, that in turn converts the power to pure sine AC voltage for consumption.
DC coupled battery systems were once largely used only for OFF-Grid living, Motorhomes and remote power systems, over the decades Hybrid (solar & battery) inverter technology has advanced rapidly and led to the development of new DC coupled energy storage configurations that are now very efficient at up to 97% converting the DC power to AC power from Energy Storage for Consumption.

DC coupled systems should first charge the battery system using the inverters built-in DC charge controller(s), called MPPT Charges, DC coupled hybrid inverters are still the most efficient conversion method available.
If you are replacing a Solar Only Inverter, we recommend you kept it as a Backup inverter, in rare chance you encounter a Hybrid inverter failure.
As Off-grid systems became larger and more advanced, DC coupled systems evolved as the preferred configuration using multi-mode inverter/chargers coupled with one of more inverters as shown above.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Systems with multiple Energy Storage Modules should be installing Bus-Bars, so that all batteries are Equally Charged & Discharged.
That is especially beneficial if there are more Batteries than inverters, or more inverters that Batteries.
DC Isolator Switches, should Only be used on Batteries as AC switches are more susceptible to Arcing if used for DC power, as AC Switch terminals are closer together, where DC terminals are further apart. |
