Battery's: Using Solar-v-Generator
True long term Power independent totally rely's on Battery or *Thermal storage! (*over 10MWh)
Battery bank and a Hybrid Inverter are the first items you should purchase!
Then you need to select the cheapest way for you to charge your battery system for later harvesting, the two most common are Solar & fuel Generator power production, Solar only allows you to produce power during the day to Harvest from your battery system after sunset, where a fuel Generator allows you to produce power for use & storage 24/7.
It is irrelevant how you charge your battery system, be it Solar or Generator, the not so secret is "how to produce and store power cheaper" than the deceptive self governed State Grid & Retail power companies charges.
As ever increasing electricity costs stifle many business and residential customers, out of the gloom comes the latest trend, quick to charge large capacity battery systems, these battery's are currently being released worldwide by companies likes of Z-Cell, Tesla, LG and magellan power etc. etc.
However, there are battery's that have been proven to last over 80+ years, Thomas Edison is credited for inventing the Nickel Iron battery (NiFe) in the late 1800's. Read this interesting article. Nickel Iron battery's will outlast all Lead acid battery's ten fold.
So, we highly recommend Nickel Iron battery's, as they are the most proven and longest lasting battery invented in the last 100yrs, they don't use Acid, they use a cheap & readily available Electrolyte composed of Potassium hydroxide and Lithium hydroxide.
- Potassium hydroxide (1.2g/cm3) is an inorganic compound with the formula KOH, and is commonly called caustic potash.
- Lithium hydroxide (20g/L) is an inorganic compound with the formula LiOH. It is a white hygroscopic crystalline material. It is soluble in water and slightly soluble in ethanol, and is available commercially in anhydrous form and as the monohydrate (LiOH.H2O), both of which are strong bases. It is the weakest base among the alkali metal hydroxides.
There several new promising breed one is Z-cell battery is RedFlow’s first battery aimed at the residential market. It is based on the company’s zinc-bromide flow battery technology, a 10kW stationary battery type which has been deployed mainly for commercial and larger-scale applications.
Tesla's Powerwall-2 lithium iron (li-ion) battery is said to last some 10 years, the key will be the final cost per kW, clamed to be able to be reduced to US$100kWh for better returns eventually. Li-ion battery's are basically being manufactured with marginally different components and boxed and branded under various trade names.
Now that battery storage used for 240v power is becoming popular the prices are being purposely increased to make a new industry, as you used to be able to purchase lithium iron etc. battery's for under $300kWh for Motor vehicles, now a domestic 10kw Tesla powerwall-2 battery wholesale priced at approx. $6'000 (US$4'500), plus now has a built in inverter, making a fully installed system a lot simpler at approx. $8'000. Prices will fall in the coming years.
There are various other types from Salt water based, all battery systems can take the dominance form the utility company's and put the power supply back in the hands of the producer (You), it is simply up to you to take the correct step the first time!
Remember to become totally independent of the Power companies, you need to be smarter by exporting excess power you produce during the day into Battery storage system (Not into the Grid), then you obviously have the choice to Harvest or sell (Export) your power from your battery system after sunset or on demand !
As it's your stored power, you also have the choice to be an independent utility company and either;
- Use the power yourself.
- Sell your power to your neighbouring Properties, Houses & Businesses.
- Sell your power to the Grid at a premium.

Three ways to charge a battery Bank;
1) Charge using excess solar power produced during the day, this can take some 6~10 hours to fully charge a 10kWh battery, that largely depends on your daytime power usage by the premises and the size of your solar array.
2) Charging/Topping up a 10kW battery bank using a silenced 10kW (50+amps) diesel generator could takes from 30~120 minutes (depending on battery type) to charge from flat to 80%, when Diesel cost $1.10 litre a 10kW genset produces 12kWA electricity per hour, so the costs will only be $2.10 for one hour running on diesel or $0.10 cents per hour using filtered Waste Vegetable Oil (WVO).
3) WVO is not for everyone, if charging your battery system using the same 10kW Genset operating on WVO, fuel costs under $0.10 litre, and produces electricity @$0.02kWh (2 cents kWh) costing just $3.00 month (operating 1hr per day) for approx. 30 litres of WVO.

Generators: Using a small 5~10kWh generator to charge your battery bank is nothing new, people have been doing this for over 100 years using 12, 24 or 36volt systems, the key these days is doing it very economically, eg. the cost of fuel use to operate an engine ends up being cheaper than what you are charged by your power company! Look at your power bill and compare there kWh charges to the kWh charges using this generator Fuel cost calculator.
Not for everyone: If you have or can source a supply of FREE waste vegetable oil (WVO), and a 2 micron water blocking or Centrifugal filtration system, your electricity bill will only be the cost of the filter(s) and your time to collect the WVO.
A two (2) micron water blocking filter only costs $30 and will filter a minimum 1'000+ litres (=$0.03 litre), that largely depending on the quality of your WVO supply, find WVO that is light brown like honey (No milky colour & Not solidified), you have a great supply.

Smart Harvesting: (become smarter than the power companies)
Being smart is learning the most economical way to produce, store and harvest the power you produce !
Obviously, the breakthrough of battery technology will be far better when a battery system has a C2 or better charge rate, that means any capacity battery(s) can be supercharge (fast charged) to 85%+ capacity in 20~40 minutes, then you will be able run a special silenced small economical Hi Amp generator to charge a smart battery in under an hour, and cost less than $2 in fuel per day, that special type of generator will provide enough kW power to run most Australian homes for 24~48hrs.
Even without solar, that in it's self is a game changer, as that generator would possibly only operate automatically once every 24~48 hours, even less with a solar system !
NB: Using WVO greatly reduces your fuel costs by produce electricity @$0.02kWh, not the normal $0.23+kWh.
Obviously collecting, filtering and storing WVO is not for everyone. For the ill informed, WVO actually reduces Greenhouse gasses by over 75% and can reduces NOx compared to petrochemical Diesel fuel, with it's additives.
That is just one indication of what can be done with a readably available source of environmentally friendly waste product.
Methane reclaimed for organic farm waste products and rubbish tips is another rapidly growing green fuel gaining growing attention, there are many Australian farmers currently taking up this methane technology.

Solar Systems: Use Solar Cells called photovoltaic or photoelectric cells are solid state electrical device that converts the energy of light directly into electricity by the photovoltaic effect.
The following are all the different types of solar cells;
The three commonly used types of solar cells are Amorphous Silicon, Polycrystalline, and Monocrystalline cells.
Assuming you already own a Solar system, you now produce electricity for FREE !
The truth is you actually gain very little from any of the electricity companies, unless you use very little electricity or you were one of the first to uptake Solar years ago and receive a rebate of up to $0.60kWh, the reason being you only receive say 8 cents a kWh rebate for excessive electricity you produce during daylight hours, that get exported to the grid.
Power companies don't want you to be smart, that's why they stopped Solar producers using the old common and simple spinner type power meters (eg. a meters with a thin round silver disk that turns when power is being consumed), as when say a 2kW system produced 20kWh of Solar power during the day and only 5kWh was used during the day, your old spinner meter actually spun backwards whilst exporting power into the grid, thus giving you 15kWh in credit, then the power you consumed at night simply used that credit at no additional cost, unlike now with the so called smart meters, you receive an insulting $0.08 (8 cents) rebate, and you are forced pay up to 400% more for the grid power you use when your solar stops producing electricity at night !
Unfortunately most people use the lion share of power after sunset, when they get slugged up to 400% more for importing electricity back from the grid. That is why the electricity companies stopped the use of the old spinner meters, as they made no commission as most homes produced more kWh of power than they use, the power company were left owing you money, obviously that is no good for the power companies that get paid up to 20% commission on your power usage!
So, the so called "SMART electrical meters" are actually a Big Con the way they are currently used, they con Solar power producers out of a fare go, as basically a smart meter separates power production & power usage (as mentioned above), so the consumer is Forced to pay a premium for the power used after sunset, and only get a paid a 25% Rebate of the power they produce during the day, simply put that's a bureaucratic Con!

Problems associated with Solar systems;
- Solar is reliant on the Sun and limited to approx. 6~10 hours a day, mostly during low electrical demand times.
- State Grid customers receive a measly $0.08 kWh Rebate from Retail power company's for excess power exported to the State Grid.
- At night Customers (without battery storage) are forced to pay up to 400% more at around $0.28kWh.
- The majority of people use 80% of there daily power in the morning and upon returning from work, to cook dinner, watch TV, lighting, showers and use all there electronic equipment that sits idle during the day.
So, the bottom line is unless you use most of your power during the day or have a very large solar array, you gain very little from having a Solar system at today's rebate rates!
The real truth is, most homes and businesses would be better off having a small solar system, a large smart battery system with a bespoke Genset incorporated with a high amp battery charger, used for a short time each day!
Be aware commercial electricity rate charged to commercial hotel or multi story building are charged from $0.02~$0.04 kWh (2~4 cents kWh), where the domestic rate is over ten (10) times more expensive!
In the near future power companies will pay a premium price to harvest power out of peoples smart battery systems, especially when the grid demand requires additional power during peak demand.

FYI: The national power grid does NOT store power (many think it does), the only way to get more power quickly, is via Hydro and Gas powered generators, with more and more smart battery systems coming online, people and businesses with smart battery systems will be the first to get paid a premium to upload there power when demanded, this is currently being rolled out by Redback an Australian company !
